What is organic wine and is it better for you?

Many of us are on a quest to live a healthy life. But can wine ever be part of a healthier lifestyle? After all, we’re always told a little bit of what you like does you good. Right? Well organic wine might be the answer.

What is organic wine?

Organic wine has surged in popularity recently, with production of it increasing by an astonishing 120 per cent. So what exactly makes wine organic? First of all, organic red wine and organic white wine are very similar to non-organic – or so-called “conventional” – wines.  The grapes in organic wine have just been grown organically.

Organic wine is grown all over the world. Organic wine from Azerbaijan, for example, is extremely popular. And not to be outdone, Italian organic wine is a great example of an organic rosé wine.

What makes wine organic?

Organic wine is made with grapes that have been grown organically. This means the whole process follows the strict criteria set by the Soil Association. The Soil Association is the organisation who grants organic status to all organic products.

To make wine organic, everything in the wine-production process must be considered. This includes the use of pesticides, land management and the preservation and storage of the wine. For example, there are over 200 types of pesticides used in the non-organic wine industry. But the Soil Association only permits the use of 20 of those pesticides under their standards.

Is organic wine better for you?

Broadly speaking, yes, organic wine is better for you. This is because there are fewer artificial chemicals such as pesticides in the production process. There’s also fewer sulfates in organic wine, and typically organic wine has lower levels of sugar and alcohol than non-organic wines. Cheers to that!
